Airplane, Airplane Where Are You?
This short book is a way I like to introduce my 5 vocabulary
words. It lends itself ro mimic the flow of "Brown Bear, Brown Bear." It also addresses concepts, using the pronoun
"I" as well as noun-verb agreement (using -ing verbs).
One way to use this book in a group is to first read it and
discuss the different vehicles in it. After reading where the vehicle is reinforce where questions and concepts by askng
"Where was the (rocket)?" Hopefully students will respond with "It was flying around the earth." If they do not
then model that response for them.
Afterwards, have some manipulatives there for each child to
imitate the concepts. Assign each child a vehicle that he is responsible for. As you reread the book, pause at
the end of each page to allow the child to mimic the actions and concepts. For example "the airplane flying high in
the sky" can be shown with the child flying an airplane high up over his head. "The blimp flying in front of the clouds"
could be two cotton balls sitting on the table with the blimp gliding in front of them.
Suggested Manipulatives for the Book:
Airplane, rocket, helicopter, blimp, hot air balloon
Ocean=child flies the helicopter over the table or blue tissue
paper
Earth=small blue ball or globe pencil sharpener
Clouds-cotton balls, white pompoms
